What Did Stonewall Jackson Say Before He Died?

Jackson was hit three times in the battle of Chancellorsville and had to have his left arm amputated. He died on May 10, 1863 with these last words: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees”.

His death helped spur Union forces to victory at Gettysburg later that year. Today, his memorial is located in Washington D.C.. The story of Jackson shows how even a loss can be turned into something positive if people remember and honor their fallen comrades-in-arms.

What Did Stonewall Jackson Say Before He Died?

Jackson was shot three times while trying to protect a Union soldier during the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. He lost his left arm in the attack and later died from his injuries on May 10th with these last words: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees” His death has been called one of America’s most tragic military losses and an inspiration for generations of Americans The amputation of Jackson’s left arm is now recognized as a war injury and is commemorated by The United States Army Medical Department each year at ceremonies held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX Jackson remains an enduring symbol of American heroism that continues to be celebrated through historic markers, museum exhibits and reenactments around the country.

Jackson was hit 3 times before he died, leading some to believe that the shots may have been intentional. Some historians suggest that Jackson’s death could’ve been a result of his opposition to slavery and the Civil War.

He is also known for his leadership during the American Revolution and as one of America’s first heroes in military history. Stonewall Jackson is considered a national icon and has become an important figure in American history.

His life story remains controversial to this day – but what did General Stonewall say before he passed away?

His left arm had to be amputated

Stonewall Jackson’s left arm had to be amputated after being shot during the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. He is said to have remarked, “It doesn’t matter if I’m dead or alive because my cause is just.” After losing his arm, he continued leading troops and eventually became General of the Confederate Army at age 22 years old.

In 1885, President Grover Cleveland awarded him the Medal of Honor for his service during the Civil War – making him one of only three people ever given this honor twice. His remains are buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia and a statue dedicated to him was erected there in 1930.

Stonewall Jackson died on May 10, 1863 with these last words: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.” His death has been attributed to a combination of pneumonia, chronic bronchitis and pleurisy – all common diseases during that time period.

Jackson was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia after his body was displayed at various public events for several months following his death. Today, visitors can see his remains inside The Hermitage Museum in Nashville, Tennessee 。 One of America’s most famous generals who fought in many important battles including Gettysburg and Vicksburg.

Prior to his death, Stonewall Jackson is reported to have said “I am not afraid to die – I am afraid of living.”
