How Did Kings Become Kings?

June 28, 2022 by Kevin Grubbs Leave a Comment

If you are looking to succeed your father in a hereditary monarchy, make sure to appoint an appointment as king. Appointments can be made through assassination or conquest.

If you’re the brother or male relative of the current king, there’s a good chance that you’ll ascend to the throne by way of assassination or conquest.

What is the origin of kings?

The English word king is derived from the Anglo-Saxon term cyning, which in turn is derived from the Common Germanic *kuningaz. The Common Germanic term was borrowed into Estonian and Finnish at an early time, surviving in these languages as kuningas.

Other European languages have terms that are cognate with British king (such as czar in Russian or Kaiser in German), but they did not borrow the original Anglo-Saxon term cyning and instead invented their own versions of it (such as tsar or kaiser). In modern British English, king has replaced its Old English predecessor on almost all levels of society, although some formal uses such as addresses to royalty retain the archaic form cyning.

Who was the first ever king?

King Sargon of Akkad was the first ever king in history. He established the world’s first empire more than 4,000 years ago and ruled over the Sumerians and Akkadians.

King Sargon is also known for his claim to be a descendant of gods. His important figure in ancient Near Eastern history has made him an essential figure in historical research.

How did kings obtain their power?

Kings acquired their power through conquest, being acclaimed by the people, elected monarchs received royal appointment from a pope, inherited monarchs gained power after passing laws and making wars for the country.

What make a king a king?

In order to be crowned a true king, one must first inherit their position. This can be done through bloodline or rule by another leader. If the throne is vacated, then an election may take place among the people.

Finally, if war threatens the kingdom, the king may have to wage it in order to keep power.

To Recap

Kings became kings by winning wars and establishing their power over other groups. Kings used their power to control the people, resources, and land around them.

This allowed them to grow their kingdoms and become even more powerful.
