History

The Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society  is a non-profit and non-denominational organization whose purpose is to preserve the history, heritage, culture, and language of the Czech people of Texas.  The chapter was formed in 1991.   Chapter dues are $15.00 yearly.

Sunday, October 12, 2008, the Lavaca Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society met for their annual social at the Sacred Heart Parish Family Center.  This meeting was an important one as it was for the election of officers for the next two years and for the selection of Miss Lavaca Czech Slovak 2009.

Miss Jenna Shimek of the Moravia community was selected as Chapter Queen.  Jenna is the daughter of Tim and Linda Shimek and is currently attending Sam Houston State University at Huntsville where she is majoring in business management.  Miss Allison Etzler, daughter of Travis and Kari Etzler, was selected by the Queen to be her Little Czech Sister.  Special guest at the meeting was Ashley Sulak, Miss Texas Czech Slovak 2008 of Hillsboro, who performed the coronation ceremony. Escorting Miss Sulak was Mr. Mark Hermes.

Miss Shimek will represent Lavaca County at the Spring Czech Heritage Society Meeting and 7th Annual Miss Texas Czech Slovak Pageant, which will be held in Hallettsville at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Saturday, April 18, 2009.  We extend congratulations to Jenna and her little Czech sister, Allison.

Officers elected for the 2009-2010 term are:  President, Irene Polansky Szwarc; First Vice President, Harvey Matusek; Second Vice President, George Bujnoch; Third Vice President, Bea Heinzel; Secretary, Evelyn Konvicka; Treasurer, Margaret Kallus and Reporter/Historian, Georgia Haas.  Elected to the board of directors for a three year term was Mr. J. G. Hrncir.  Congratulations to all.


Tarock Club

The fifteenth Annual Tarok Tournament, sponsored by the Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society, drew 48 players from a wide area of Texas.  It was held on Sunday March 8, 2009 at the KC Hall in Hallettsville.

 

top winners were:
1st place:  Dial Cronwell with 619 points
2nd place:  Joe Vyvjala with 522 points
3ed place:  Peggy Dreshach with 515 points
4th place:  Jimmie Coufal with 514 points

A catered meal was served at noon along with coffee and kolaches during the day.

If you are interested in learning to play Tarock, or just having a good time, join our Tarock players who meet ever other Wednesday at the office building of Kathleen Chovanetz. One block north of the square, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
