The Ellis County Czech Heritage Society is happy to announce a very busy
schedule for the year 2011. This year it was decided that we will be holding
membership meetings quarterly on Sunday afternoons at the K.J.T. Dining Room. We
will meet at 2:00 p.m. and adjourn at 5:00 p.m. after enjoying light
refreshments and time to visit with one-another. The K.J.T. Hall is located at
1216 South Paris Street, Ennis, and new members and guests are always welcome.
Schedule follows, please join us... March 13th, Sunday, first ECCHS meeting,
K.J.T. Dining Room, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Other meeting dates for the year:
June 5th, September 11th, December 11th. The December 11th meeting will be our
Christmas Meeting and it will be a short business discussion followed by a
delicious Soup, Sandwich and Dessert celebration.
Currently, the Ennis Chapter of the ECCHS is sponsoring Czech Language Classes
every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the K.J.T. dining room. The classes began
on January 12th and they will continue every Wednesday until March 9th. If you
are interested in learning a second language it is not too late to join us. The
classes are taught by Mr. Joe Janecka and cover grammar, pronunciation,
conversational Czech and Mr. Janecka includes Czech history from the year 863 to
the present. This is a very informative class and even if you speak the language
you will learn something that will be of value.
We would like to inform anyone interested in Czech culture and music to visit
Ennis and enjoy all the events coming up this year. On February 12th Saturday,
the Fifth Annual Czech Music Festival will be held at the Sokol Hall, located at
2622 E. Highway 34. This year there will be five popular local bands for your
enjoyment, the Czech Harvesters, the Jodie Mikula Orchestra, Czech and Then
Some, The Ennis Czech Boys and Jak Se Do. There will be raffle prizes and a cash
bar and remember that Czech Krojs (costumes) are encouraged. Festivities will
begin at 1:30 p.m. and end at 11:30 p.m. and tickets are $5.00 per person with
children 14 and under free. There will be a pre-party Jam Session on Friday the
11th from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. with no cover-charge.
Sunday, February 13th St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church will be celebrating
the Feast Day of Sts. Cyril and Methodius at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. This will be a
Polka Mass, the hymns will be sung in Czech by the St. John Czech Choir,
parishioners are encouraged to wear their Czech Krojs (costumes), and following
the mass there will be a procession to the K.J.T. Hall for a pot luck luncheon
and celebration. Everyone is invited to join in and share the celebration of
Saint Cyril and Methodius who brought the Catholic religion and Czech alphabet
and language to the Czech lands.
In April in Ennis it is all about the 60th Celebration of The Ennis Bluebonnet
Trails. The dates this year will be Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17. We
believe this year our Bluebonnet Trails will be abloom with the State of Texas
flower and we anticipate a wonderful turn-out for this two day weekend. Featured
besides the trail tours will be live music, children's activities, souvenir
vendors and much more.
Ennis will be celebrating its 45th Annual National Polka Festival on May 27, 28,
29th. The Grand Marshalls of our Celebration will be two Embassy Ambassadors of
the Czech Republic. Need we say more! This festival has 45 years of celebrating
Czech Heritage with a grand parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday the 28th
followed by Czech music and Street Dancing downtown, booths featuring klobase
and bar-b-que, vendors featuring Czech imports and many other interesting items.
There will be various musical groups and a childrens area with rides and other
activities. Remember there are three fraternal halls featured in this
celebration in Ennis, the K.J.T. Hall located at 1216 S. Paris Street, the
Knights of Columbus Hall located at 850 S, Interstate 45 Hwy, and the Sokol Hall
located at 2622 E. Highway 34. Here you will be able to taste the flavor of
Czech cuisine beginning at 11:30 a.m. followed by Czech music until the wee
hours. Each hall will feature its own form of entertainment and everyone will
have a great time. If you desire more information please visit
www.visitennis.org .
